EDUCATE: EMPOWER: EMPLOY
The Green Revolution within India commenced in the early 1960s that led to an increase in food grain production,
especially in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Major milestones in this undertaking were the development of
high-yielding varieties of wheat, and rust resistant strains of wheat. To put gures in context, from 1961-62 to 1985-

followed by Haryana with an agricultural growth of 4.7%. Whole nation is looking at these two states viz. Haryana

In Haryana, project started with Rs 510.36 crore in next three years under the Crop Cluster Development Programme

Editor in chief Similarly Punjab government has planned to establish fruit, ower and vegetable estates at six different zones in the
state to encourage farmers to give up on wheat-paddy cycle. These estates will help farmers to grow rened quality of
fruits, vegetables and owers under the grants from the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY). Punjab will have

separate cluster for every fruit to promote its farming. Punjab Horticulture Department will set up citrus fruit
estates in Abohar and Hoshiarpur. Pears will be grown in Amritsar, litchi farming in Pathankot and potato estate will
be in Jalandhar, Doraha will have ower estate while Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib will have guava estate cluster.
“Once the farms are set up, the Horticulture Department will ensure that a separate ofce is established and staff
deployed under this scheme to promote fruit farming in Punjab. Farmers who opt for the fruit orchards would be given
all facilities, including urea, machines and even pesticides, at subsidised rates. Punjab is also going to start one
Horticulture University very soon to meet the future demand of horticulture scientist. Recently Punjab government
has decided to establish a Guava Research Estate on 25 acres at Wajidpur village at a cost of Rs 4 crore, while such
farms will be set up in other districts where earmarked fruits will be promoted.
“The whole idea is to help farmers to give up on wheat and paddy cycle and save underground water and also promote
fruit farming as a means of livelihood”. So where big states like UP, MP, Bihar and Rajasthan conned their
agriculture policy in loan waiver, crop insurance and minimum support Price (MSP) these two states are working
silently and implementing their policies to promote crop diversication. I hope in coming decades these two states
would once again lead in transformation of agriculture sector in India.
